### Summary
The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of janitorial and custodial work that requires substantial physical effort to operate and adjust heavy duty cleaning equipment and climb ladders, and apply a significant knowledge of infection control and hazardous waste procedures to ensure compliance with safety and health directives. The position is located in a Department of Veteran Affairs facility.

### Responsibilities
Incumbent performs the full range of light and heavy cleaning duties following strict aseptic techniques and isolation procedures, as well as other routine housekeeping duties. Duties include mopping, scrubbing, dusting, and cleaning a wide variety of surfaces and interior fixtures, vents, doors, window glass, waste receptacles, trash removal and linen handling. Incumbent must have skill and knowledge necessary to perform duties using strict aseptic techniques and keep the area free from possibility of cross-infection. The incumbent is responsible to organize and carry out duties as assigned. For complete list of duties, please contact Human Resources.
This position serves as a Housekeeping Aid located at the Western New York Healthcare System in Buffalo, NY.
**Work Schedule:** To Be Determined, may consist of Weekdays (Day, Evening, and Overnight tours) and Weekends (Day, Evening, and Overnight tours) or as needed.

### Qualifications
Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of cleaning duties, such as sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors; cleaning surfaces such as light fixtures, venetian blinds, and counter-tops; and cleaning restroom facilities including toilets, baths, and sinks.
**EXPERIENCE**: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume or OF-612. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
**SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:** Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Housekeeping Aid without more than normal supervision.
**JOB ELEMENTS:** Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

**PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS:** The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.
**WORKING CONDITIONS:** Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation's. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt, and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
